New Softstarter range from ABB2003-06-23 - The new PST Softstarter - that speaks 11 languages - is now available for sales world-wide. Designed for motor currents from 30 to 1050 A, they complement the existing PSS softstarters introduced in 1999. The PST range incorporates a number of advanced features including fieldbus communication and advanced motor protection. Their main function is to control AC motors to ensure smooth starting by reducing the starting current and eliminating current spikes.Primary applications for the PST Softstarter include: pumps, fans, blowers, centrifuges, mixers, and conveyors. By utilizing closed loop current control PST softstarters help minimize the impact of motor starting on the electrical network. This prolongs the life of mechanical components such as coupling and belts and gearboxes. In addition, all PST Softstarters include a soft stop feature. When engaged the PST soft stop feature results in a slower, gentler stopping of driven load. This eliminates "hammering" in pumping systems and prolongs the life of gearboxes and drive belts when operating compressors, mixers, and conveyors.Main featuresEasy to useLCD display with four pushbuttons on the keypad. PST is just as easy to operate as a mobile phone. All information is shown in plain text and almost a dozen languages are available. Standard settings are available for many common applications such as pump, mixer and crusher drives. An Event log lists the last 20 events.Advanced motor protectionFour different tripping classes. One class may be set for the start-up and another one for continuous running, giving dual overload protection. Protection also provided against locked rotor, phase imbalance, phase reversal and high current. PST has a service factor of 115%.Programmable relaysThree output signals programmed to signal Run, Top of Ramp and Event. Each relay can be programmed for any of these functions. The Event function provides a series of alternative protection, fault and warning signals.Flexible communicationThree communication modes: keypad, hard-wired and bus connection. Bus connection uses ABB’s FieldBusPlug, which ensures simple and fast connection to the bus. With a ‘neutral’ fieldbus-independent interface, PST can be connected to any existing protocol in the FieldBusPlug range.No additional equipment neededBecause all the necessary functions are integrated into PST, it does not require any additional equipment.ABB IndustrialITThe PST softstarters are IndustrialIT enabled and therefore constitute ‘building blocks’ for use in larger systems.
