Two French research centers are joining forces to develop new software solutions for the study and monitoring of geological carbon dioxide (CO2) storage facilities. BRGM and IFP have signed a research partnership agreement that will draw on their complimentary knowledge of the physicochemical processes in CO2 storage, as well as their recognized expertise in the field of subsurface modeling.
This research partnership agreement between BRGM and IFP is designed to meet the many important strategic challenges associated with the implementation of CO2 storage solutions, and in particular that of the medium- to long-term security of storage.
Research and training provider IFP will reportedly bring its expertise in the fields of basin modeling and reservoir engineering to the partnership. This expertise is embodied in its COORES model, which was developed to simulate the injection of CO2 and the long-term stability of storage facilities.
The model takes into account multiple scales of time and space—from the rock element to the storage site and the sedimentary basin. IFP states that COORES can be used to simulate various storage solutions under consideration and their evolution over long periods of time. It can also be used to model multiphase reactive flows, together with their geomechanical impact on the constituent and surrounding elements of the storage facility, namely the well, cap rocks, and faults.
BRGM’s contribution to the partnership will come from its long tradition in geological, geochemical, hydrodynamic, thermal, and geomechanical modeling applied to various fields of geoscience. Notably, BRGM has developed thermodynamic and kinetic databases on fluids and minerals, as well as the SCALESIM software used to simulate water-gas-mineral chemical interactions for complex geochemical systems at high salinity levels. These resources will all be brought to bear on the modeling of the chemical reactivity of CO2 storage facilities.
The companies state that this new research partnership reinforces a strategic alliance that they forged in August 2007 through the creation, with Geostock, of Geogreen, a company dedicated to engineering activities in the field of geological CO2 storage. BRGM and IFP are also members of CO2GeoNet, a 13-member European network of excellence on geological CO2 storage.
