In choosing valves for severe service use, one could traditionally count on paying a premium. Mogas Industries has responded by designing its patented thermally-compensated mounting flange, which is suitable for high temperature applications but replaces expensive titanium with stainless steel to offer reliable and safe service at a lower price.

For applications involving high temperatures and corrosive fluids, titanium has been the construction material of choice for valves due to its corrosion resistance and ability to withstand severe service environments. However, titanium also happens to be one of the most expensive metals used to construct valves. And, as with any metal, titanium expands upon heating; over time, this expansion could result in a dangerous and costly leak between the valve and the mounting flange to which it is attached.

A mounting flange is a necessary component, used to attach various pieces of equipment to a valve, such as a gear or actuator to operate a stem or to open and close a valve. Mogas responded to this expansion concern by using a titanium mounting flange coupled with the titanium valve, which allows for the thermal expansion to be equivalent and lowers the risk of a leak. However, this drives up the price.

If cost savings were to be realized without diminishing the integrity of the valve, two Mogas engineers realized it would be found in a redesign of the mounting flange. John Williams, Mogas vice president of Engineering, and Vinh Nguyen, director of Technology and R&D, designed a thermal-compensating mounting flange constructed of 410 stainless steel.

However, merely changing the material of the mounting flange was not sufficient, as 410 stainless has a different thermal expansion coefficient than titanium. This can result in excessive thermal stresses developing in the mounting flange which might lead to premature failure of the valve, mounting flange, and/or any mechanical operators attached to the valve.

Williams and Nguyen answered this challenge by introducing an engineered precision cut in the flange, which allows the flange to grow and flex without causing damage to the valve, while maintaining precision alignment of the valve stem and actuator. The result is a cost savings for the customer up to approximately 70% without jeopardizing the valve's safety.

"The thermal expansion issue creates undue stresses on the flange and the valve. By using a less expensive material for the mounting flange and incorporating the slit in the flange we have found a way to reduce the cost, reduce the thermal stress, and provide a sound answer to the challenge we were presented," said Nguyen.
