An imaging technology that can identify and image substances down to the molecular or atomic level is setting its sights on reservoirs in the Middle East. Scottish company Adrok Group has signed a deal with IBD Group to provide its technology, known as the Atomic Dielectric Resonance (ADR) Scanner, to operators all over the region.

ADR is an imaging technology that conducts subterranean scans—akin to an electronic borehole reading—by transmitting a continuous pulse of energy at the speed of light. The system's data logger captures the light waves that are reflected back to the surface, performs an initial assessment of data quality assurance, and then transmits the data via internet to Adrok's processing team at an offsite location for analysis.

The analysis includes a measurement of the resonance of the rock and other subsurface substances, including hydrocarbons, and how these different substances reflect the light wave. The data output is pictorial, showing every major subsurface stratigraphic horizon down to a depth of 4 km, classified and with thickness. Results can be configured for and merged with a standard geological or petrological software package for further modeling.

Adrok states that ADR does not employ the methods of interpretation or probability to identify subsurface materials like other imaging systems, but rather uses typecasting and mathematical comparisons. This allows for a clear distinction between different rock types, a quantification of oil and gas reserves, and insights into the mix of sand and water. Exploration companies and operators are able to map geological structures to a higher resolution and undertake scans of large remote areas, which ultimately provides a more accurate capability to pinpoint hydrocarbons before drilling beings, the company states.

The technology can be used for appraisal activities, field delineation and gross volumetrics, identification of infill drilling locations, monitoring of producing fields, and exploration activities. Test areas for ADR have included primarily onshore locations such as Scotland's volcanic sites, Omani deserts, and the Canadian Arctic circle, although some additional offshore testing has been conducted.

The new agreement with IBD Group involves the licensing of Adrok's technology to the Group for the purpose of providing the ADR Scanner directly to oil and gas companies in the Middle East.

The Oman-based IBD Group was formed to assist and facilitate local and international companies in providing services and products in the Middle East. Chief Executive Officer Sayyid Mohammed Al-Said said, "This technology has the potential to change the way oil and gas companies conduct business, not only in new exploration but also in finding the oil or gas that was left behind in old fields. I believe the technology will significantly contribute to reducing oil or gas extraction cost, which would translate into savings in overall cost to the end user. We are excited that this partnership will bring the technology to the Middle East."
